Handcrafted Rattan Lampshades in New York: Lumière Shades x Armadillo

in Apr 15, 2026

There are collaborations that make sense on paper, and there are those that make sense in a room. The partnership between Lumière Shades and Armadillo belongs to the second kind.

Earlier this year, four handcrafted rattan lampshades made in Lumière's Bali studio were installed inside Armadillo's New York showroom. Not shipped as samples. Not held in storage. Installed, lit, and living inside one of the most considered design spaces in the city.

Two Brands, One Material Language
Armadillo has long been a benchmark for the kind of interior design that values natural materials, slow craft, and objects made to last. When they approached Lumière Shades about a collaboration, the conversation started where it should with the work itself.

Samples were made and sent from Bali to New York. Proportions were refined. Structure and finish were adjusted across multiple rounds until every detail held. A custom mould was built specifically to protect each shade in transit so that what arrived in Manhattan was exactly what left the studio in Bali.

Four final pieces. Handcrafted rattan, shaped and finished by skilled artisan makers. Now casting light inside a showroom that understands what handmade objects are actually for.

The Quiet Significance of a Handcrafted Object
A piece of rattan, shaped by hand in Bali, casting light in Manhattan. There is something quietly extraordinary about that journey and about what it means for the object itself.

Handcrafted lighting carries its origin into every room it enters. The warmth of natural materials, the slight irregularities of hand work, the weight of something made with attention, these are qualities that no manufactured product can replicate. They are also exactly what a considered interior needs to feel complete rather than composed.

This is what Lumière Shades has built since its founding: artisan-made lampshades in linen and rattan, designed in Australia and handcrafted in Bali, for interiors that treat light as a material rather than an afterthought.

What Comes Next
The New York installation is the beginning of an ongoing relationship. Lumière Shades is currently developing pieces for Armadillo's upcoming Dallas showroom, the next chapter of a collaboration grounded in shared values around craft, material integrity, and considered design.
